The Douglas DC-3 is just as legendary an aircraft model as the Mustang or the Spitfire. It has remained in service longer than any other model, and several hundred examples are still in use worldwide. Many young US airlines owed their rise to their DC-3 aircraft, and almost all major post-war airlines included this type of aircraft in their flight schedules in order to utilise the surplus of military DC-3 aircraft (C-47) after the Second World War. In Douglas DC-3. 90 Glorious Years, Geoff Jones examines the aircraft's rich history from its beginnings in Southern California in the 1930s, through its participation in military operations such as the Normandy landings on D-Day, to its use as a commercial aircraft in the second half of the 20th century and into the 21st century. Today's operators of Airbus and Boeing owe their success to the use of the DC-3, and numerous enthusiast organisations continue to keep the DC-3 airworthy and fly it for their members. Even after 90 years, the legacy of this extraordinary aircraft remains as strong as ever.
