The legendary SR-71 Blackbird spy plane was and remains the only Mach 3 aircraft in the world and was developed, built and tested by Lockheed's famous Skunk Works. This book looks at all 50 Blackbird models that were built, from the first flight in 1962 to the last 37 years later. Intended as a replacement for the venerable U-2 spy plane, Lockheed took only 32 months from signing the contract to develop a successor to the U-2 to the maiden flight of the SR-71 prototype in 1962. From the revolutionary design of the SR-71 to the first radar cross-section models to the sophisticated systems and subsystems, this book describes and illustrates one of the most significant aircraft designs in aviation history, using many never-before-seen photos.
