The 1942 summer campaign in the southern section of the Eastern Front had taken the Germans first to the east, but then increasingly to the south and south-east; the Soviet counter-offensive not only isolated the 6th Army at Stalingrad; it also raised the possibility of the collapse of the entire front. The eventual failure of the Red Army was due in no small part to the efforts of one of the Wehrmacht's greatest commanders: Erich von Manstein, who rebuilt the German front line and led a mobile campaign combining all the strengths of the Wehrmacht.
The German troops and all the weaknesses of their Soviet opponents were exploited. Written by one of the world's leading experts on the history of the war on the Eastern Front, On a Knife's Edge. The Ukraine, November 1942 - March 1943" is an operational history study of brilliant troop leadership, missed opportunities and survival in perhaps the toughest theatre of war of WW2.
