The infantry division (mot.) "Großdeutschland", newly formed in April 1942, was to become an elite unit of the Wehrmacht. In addition to volunteers, some of whom were battle-hardened compatriots, the unit was finally filled only by young men who had no criminal record, were of minimum height and did not wear glasses, due to a special provision of the OKW. The division received its first assignment during the summer offensive of 1942 on the Eastern Front. From their winter quarters, individual troop units advanced far into the enemy rear and were able to capture and hold strategically important targets.
