The three field marshals featured in this book were among the best in their field: Field Marshal Kesselring earned a reputation in Italy as a defence expert, and his Allied code name was "The Emperor". Kesselring was diplomatic, charming and known as "Smiling Albert", but was convicted as a war criminal, which might not have happened without the bitter partisan war. Field Marshal Rommel is surrounded by myths that need to be untangled. He possessed exceptional leadership qualities, personal courage and determination, but had problems that can be traced back to two main reasons. The first was his relentless ambition, which prevented him from criticising and evaluating himself. The second reason was his meteoric rise as a commander, and like many other commanders, he was driven by ambition. Field Marshal Model led his men so well on the battlefield that it is surprising how little is known about him. He fought in defensive battles like hardly any other German general. He had a tremendous ability to hold his nerve, but his skills as a commander were not matched by the kind of personality that would have given him a similar status to Rommel, nor did it help him to challenge Hitler. Model had a reputation for being so tough that even Hitler claimed he wouldn't want to serve under him, he was known as a frontline pig.
