"if I were elected Reich President and I made Hitler Reich Chancellor. Then I will have the reins in my hands" - this was the dream of the last German Crown Prince Wilhelm of Prussia in January 1932. But he was not the only player on the radical right who wanted to come to a political arrangement with the powerfully rising National Socialists at the beginning of the 1930s. Lothar Machtan traces this mishmash of informal machinations with sensational source material, without which it is impossible to understand how Hitler's Reich Chancellorship could have come about at all on 30 January 1933.
The author lets the central players speak to us directly from first-person documents and thus comes as close as possible to the events. A fascinating chamber play of political intrigue, in which the main protagonist appears in ever new roles and yet unconvincingly follows one constant: the utopian idea that with Hitler he could restore the overthrown Hohenzollern throne.
