How a photograph becomes a clue: Strange stories circulate in the family: Grandfather was nominated for the 1936 Olympic Games. He hunted Tito. And was friends with resistance fighters. At the Institute for Contemporary History, the lawyer Dagmar Knigge stumbles upon a photograph showing her grandfather shaking hands with Hitler. Now she wants to know for sure: Who was Hans-Joachim Knigge? Did he murder for the SS? For four years, she analyzes files from Germany, Moscow, Washington, and Riga. The result remains ambivalent: a puzzle of contradictory evidence, cover-ups, and a personal tragedy. With legal acumen, Dagmar Knigge examines the family narratives and reflects on guilt, responsibility, and radicalization. Her book, written in collaboration with the journalist Lutz Kinkel, is biography, contemporary history, and self-examination all at oncea moving attempt to grasp the complexity of the Nazi past.
