Life in fear, hope for peace: Field post from home and the front. To this day, the fear-filled and particularly brutal final phase of the Second World War shapes the Germans' memories of this war. In addition to the everyday horror of the bombing war, this phase was also marked by the ground war, which had not hit Germany with such force since the days of the wars of liberation. This work offers a well-structured introduction to the entire development from the end of 1944 to May 1945. By analysing private letters from the last months of the war that were no longer delivered, it also succeeds in showing very vividly how differently the war could be experienced and perceived by individuals, even in the midst of general hardship, depending on place and time.
