During the years 1933 to 1939, which Charles Bewley spent as Irish envoy in Berlin, he had the opportunity to observe the popularity Hermann Göring enjoyed, both among the German people and the diplomatic corps, as Prime Minister of Prussia and Commander-in-Chief of the Luftwaffe. Already during the war, when Bewley was living in Berlin and Rome, he noticed the increasing vehemence of the attacks against Reichsmarschall Göring.
This emerging contrast between his own observations and the reporting in the wartime and post-war period led him to deal intensively with the person Hermann Göring as well as his family. With the help of many companions and relatives of Hermann Göring, Bewley wrote down this portrait of his life. Beginning with his youth and his experiences in World War II, through the so-called "fighting period" and Göring's two marriages, to his political and military offices and Göring's appearance at the Nuremberg trial, the author always includes world political developments.
