The German Nebeltruppe was conceived in 1929 as a specialised branch of the artillery for the development, testing and implementation of materials, munitions and gauges in the field of chemical warfare and artificial fog. It became an autonomous branch of the artillery in 1936, and from 1940 and during World War 2, due to the development of the "Nebelwerfer" weapon system, it represented a combat-grade instrument in the arsenal of the German artillery.

The number of members of the Nebeltruppe increased sharply during the war years due to improvements in combat performance and operational tactics. This book provides the reader with a detailed account of the uniforms, headgear and insignia of the Nebeltruppen between 1934 and 1945, supplemented by an account of the organisation of the units of this force and a description of their deployment on the battlefields of World War 2.
A selection of photographs and contemporary documents, all in chronological order, commemorate the military careers of men who served in this unprecedented branch of the armed forces at the time.
