Lieutenant Emser and his men no longer believe in the ideals that have been drummed into them for years. Hope for victory is fading. Desperately, the soldiers try to hold on to the territories they have already conquered. The Kuban bridgehead plays a considerable role in this. When Emser learns that his wife has been killed in an air raid, he finds it difficult to see any meaning in his life anymore. That's when he meets Marianne. The young woman manages to give him new courage to face life. And in the midst of war and destruction, he experiences a little bit of happiness. But the bridgehead cannot be held and the retreat to the Crimea claims more lives.
