This campaign unjustly belongs to the almost forgotten theatres of war of the Second World War. Not only were elementary prerequisites for further Allied victories created here, but the course was set for the regional post-war order. French units loyal to Vichy fought doggedly against a coalition of Free French, Australian, British and Indian troops supported by Transjordanian and Jewish units.
Tank engagements and amphibious landings took place, as did some of the last cavalry charges in military history. Against the backdrop of fighting in the desert and mountains, the lofty and illusory hopes of the Axis powers, whose intelligence operations in the region were hopelessly inferior to those of their British counterparts, were shattered. The Lebanon-Syria campaign of 1941 is part of the prehistory of the Israeli-Arab Middle East conflict as well as the Lebanese and Syrian civil wars.
