In the early hours of 22 June 1941, Germany and its allies attacked the Soviet Union under the code name "Barbarossa". At the time of the attack, around 3.6 million German and allied soldiers crossed the Soviet border with 3,600 armoured vehicles, 7,100 artillery pieces and 2,700 aircraft. Army Group South had the largest number of non-German troops: 325,000 Romanian soldiers, who were later joined by 96,000 Hungarian, 62,000 Italian and 45,000 Slovakian soldiers. The Soviet forces facing them were better prepared than the other Red Army units along the border. The Kiev Military District under the command of Colonel General Kirponos was responsible for the occupation of the 940 km long defence line.
