How the Allies Lost Their Chance for Total Victory. In July 1943, the Allies made a major landing in Sicily. The invasion of Sicily was a success, and made Generals George S. Patton and Bernard S. Montgomery famous. But in the opinion of the authors of this work, the Allies squandered the opportunity for a quick and complete victory over Germany on Sicily because the Allies' slow action allowed the four German divisions to escape to the Italian mainland, where they put up a fierce resistance in the various defensive lines almost until the end of the war.
