Description
The so-called "Numbers Stations" are shortwave radio broadcasts that are broadcast at different times of the day and for different durations. They can be found on many frequencies and have been observed and studied for decades by radio operators all over the world. These mysterious transmissions, which consist of voices reading out groups of numbers or letters of the international phonetic alphabet, or Morse code or tone pulses, are often preceded by "warnings" at the beginning of the transmission, consisting of short pieces of music, sequences of letters or scales repeated cyclically at specific times.
Various studies by telecommunications experts have concluded that these transmissions were and are used by numerous intelligence agencies to transmit short text messages to their covert agents in other countries. After the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989, these transmissions declined significantly, but in recent years, with the emergence of the respective new geopolitical players in the world, more transmissions have been made and Chinese, Korean and Indian number stations have been picked up.
