On 10 June 1944, time stood still in Oradour-sur-Glane. The quiet village in the north-west of France's Massif Central was reduced to rubble by units of the 2nd SS Armoured Division "Das Reich". 642 people were shot and burnt for no reason - the majority of them women and children. The illustrated book provides information about the events, the massacre of Oradour and the hangings in Tulle a day earlier, about the inadequate legal reappraisal of the crimes, the Bordeaux trials and the failure of the German justice system. In their eyewitness accounts, survivors describe the course of the atrocities. The views of well-known artists and writers on the horrors of Oradour are expressed in poems and drawings. The impressive and expressive photos in the illustrated section are of particular importance. A small chronicle and bibliographical references complete the bilingual volume.
