Descriptionof Stuart Tank. Volume 2: The M5, M5A1, and Howitzer Motor Carriage M8 Versions in World War II
-
Manufacturer
The "Stuart" light tanks were the first tanks taken into combat by U.S. troops during WWII. Production of these vehicles can be broken into two categories: the early tanks powered by air-cooled radial engines, and late vehicles powered by twin V-8 engines. This volume explores the late vehicles with Cadillac water-cooled engines, the M5 and M5A1, as well as the M8 Howitzer Motor Carriage. Widely used by both the U.S. Army and U.S. Marines, as well as many Allied nations, these tanks, though lightly armed and armored, were mechanically sound and were widely used by U.S. forces in Europe and the Pacific, as well as by Allied nations. Through dozens of archival photos, including previously unpublished images, as well as detailed photographs of some of the finest existing examples of these vehicles, this early-war combat vehicle is explored, and its history is explained. A companion volume explores the early M3, M3A1, and M3A3 versions.
This volume presents the late vehicles with water-cooled Cadillac engines, which includes the M5 and M5A1 models as well as the M8 "Howitzer Motor Carriage". These tanks, used by both the U.S. Army and Marines as well as various other Allied nations, were lightly armoured and armed but mechanically sound and were widely used by U.S. forces in Europe and the Pacific as well as by Allied nations. Using dozens of contemporary photographs, including previously unpublished images, as well as richly detailed photos of some surviving museum examples, this book documents and explains the history of this combat vehicle from the early period of U.S. involvement in World War II. The first volume examines the early versions M3, M3A1 and M3A3.
