The casual visitor to Carlisle Cathedral will notice the massive sandstone walls, the magnificent ceiling and the exquisite Flemish carving of the Brougham Triptych, but less so a brass plaque on the north wall. It commemorates a man who would probably have preferred not to be noticed. Once a reserved schoolmaster in Bentham near Lancaster and a humble country parson in Hutton Roof near Kirkby Lonsdale, at the age of 54 he was to become the most decorated non-combatant of the First World War: Honours won not by hot blood and fury, but by cool, tenacious courage. He died just a few days before the armistice - this book tells his story. In the modern world, where selfishness and greed prevail, it is a story of comradeship, selflessness and incredible heroism that should never be forgotten. Above all, however, it is the story of one man's Christian testimony that even the most sceptical agnostic or convinced atheist must respect.
