In this study, Markus Raasch takes an innovative look at the previously little-noticed state youth defence force, which was set up during the First World War to provide paramilitary training to young men and had a direct impact on the lives of millions of people. The book attaches equal importance to the ideological foundations and organisational structures as well as the experiences of those affected. It also consistently embeds German developments in an international context. This makes it clear that the state youth defence force, with its local companies, was a bureaucratic behemoth and at the same time an integral part of wartime society. It emphatically accelerated social militarisation, gave German (youth) war culture a specific character and can be interpreted as a precursor to National Socialism.
