Description
Tens of thousands of soldiers were sacrificed by the Germans and French during the battles on the west bank of the Meuse to capture or hold the double height "Toter Mann" and Hill 304. The possession of Hill 304 in particular caused both sides to throw regiment after regiment into the fire orc almost without interruption. In August 1917, a French attack led by superior forces hit the heights west of the Meuse. But it was not until Hill Dead Man fell back into French hands that the German command was forced to evacuate Hill 304 as well.
