On 20 July 1944, an officer carried out an assassination attempt on Hitler. Stauffenberg and other army officers attempted to overthrow the Nazi regime and end the hopeless war. Was it just an "uprising of conscience"? What was the military tradition of the conspirators? And what military considerations underpinned their actions? This volume analyses the events from a specific military-historical perspective and focuses on the military planning of the coup.
However, it also examines the effects of the assassination and attempted coup on the post-war military in West and East Germany as well as in Austria. The fact that Stauffenberg and his co-conspirators had a different idea of the role of the military in the state did not make it easy for the post-war armies to place themselves in the tradition of the uprising against the war and the criminal regime. Volume 21 of the series "Zeitalter der Weltkriege" published by the Military History Research Office.
