The Allied occupation of the Rhineland after the First World War has so far been told mainly as a history of Franco-German relations. This book is the first to focus on the British occupation. Based on an extensive corpus of sources from British and German archives, Benedikt Neuwöhner examines the organisation, practice and effects of British occupation rule in the Rhineland.
Who were the men who ran the occupation regime on the ground? What strategies and practices of rule did they use to generate willingness to cooperate and minimise resistance? Neuwöhner reconstructs, among other things, the network of relationships between the occupiers and the local elites, the negotiation of mass conflicts and the symbolic communication of the British occupying power. In the process, new insights and perspectives emerge that challenge hitherto common notions of the Allied occupation of the Rhineland after the First World War. Volume 119 of the series "War in History".
