The author traces the crisis situation before 1914, the escalation and the failure of diplomatic attempts at a solution in that summer of the year and informs about the current state of research on the repeatedly raised question of war guilt. Often quoted, but also lesser known key documents from archives and editions not easily accessible to the layman are printed and explained in their wording. In this way, even non-specialists can understand the main strands of the events, the ideas and horizons of thought of the statesmen and military leaders responsible at the time. None of them suspected or wanted the war in 1914 that became a cruel reality in 1916 before Verdun and on the Somme. In this respect, this book also teaches us the imponderable dangers of any war that is thought to be limited.
