This book deals with the uniforms of the guards and regular military units of the Russian army at the time of Tsar Alexander II (1855-1861). Due to constant innovations and changes in the uniforms of the Russian military during this period in particular, this period has so far only been sporadically examined by uniform historians. This is the first publication published in Russia after 1917 to analyse in detail the development of military uniforms at the time of Tsar Alexander II.
Structurally, the presentation is divided into a general part, which looks at the changes in uniforms in connection with all or a significant part of the troops and military personnel, and chapters devoted to specific changes in uniforms for individual troop types or formations (imperial retinue, guards, infantry, cavalry, artillery, etc.). Special chapters describe weapons, equipment and riding gear. The rules for wearing different types of uniform (parade, ceremonial, everyday and war uniform) are given as an appendix. The entire work is divided into two volumes for ease of use and due to the wealth of material: Volume 1 provides general information on military uniforms under Tsar Alexander II and goes on to describe the uniforms of the Guard units; Volume 2 is then devoted to the uniforms of the regular army troops as well as their armour and equipment.
