On 3 July 1866, Prussian troops met the armies of Austria and Saxony at Königgrätz. The victory ultimately enabled Prussia to assert its supremacy in Germany and Bismarck to push through the Kleindeutsche solution. In this volume of the "marixwissen" series, the military historian Helmut Neuhold examines the battle, which is so important for European history, and explains its prehistory, course, political and social background, the central personalities and the political consequences. He pays special attention to the tactical-strategic aspects and the weapon-technological innovation of the notorious firing pin rifle.
