Not just a British monarch ...: George August of Brunswick-Lüneburg, who spoke German with his servants but preferred French with his family, first came to Britain at the age of 31 - which he was to rule for 33 years. Under the reign of George II, the Empire experienced an extraordinary period of prosperity - economically, militarily, culturally.
During his long British reign, however, his interest in politics in the Holy Roman Empire always remained undiminished. Thus, out of concern for his Hanoverian rule, he fought on the side of Frederick the Great against Maria Theresa and France in the Seven Years' War. George II was thus both a powerful imperial prince and king of a colonial empire. Norman Davies pulls out all the stops of heart-stopping stylistic elegance and wonderfully British irony, demonstrating to a German reading public how a Baroque blue-blooded heavyweight can be easily portrayed
