The Seven Years' War was a global conflict between major European powers. In the process, it is lost sight of the fact that less powerful states also became actors in order to realise their own power-political goals in the shadow of the great powers. Among them was Sweden, whose leading politicians intended to raise Sweden's diminished foreign policy standing and strengthen its domestic power by entering the war.

This calculation did not work out: it failed due to insufficient military forces and financial resources, a dysfunctional alliance and the resilience of the Prussian state. One of those who went to war for Sweden was Lieutenant Gustaf Henrik von Dahlstierna. His records, together with the self-testimonies of other participants in the war, provide an authentic insight into the peculiarities of the fighting between Swedish and Prussian troops on a secondary theatre of the Seven Years' War.
