The 18th century was marked by far-reaching upheavals and changes. The class-based state lost its contours and the guild-regulated labour markets dissolved. During this period, the standing army was also established, with its soldiers permanently under arms. In the 1780s, soldiers were recruited through subsidy contracts in the new military labour markets and placed in the service of England and Holland to support their troops in their colonial wars in Africa and Asia. Michael Mann describes the everyday life of these soldiers, from recruitment, training, transport and the few overseas military operations to weddings, family life, leisure time and death. In the 18th century, it was indeed desirable not only to join the military, but also to sign up for foreign service.
