For almost two and a half centuries, from the beginning of the 16th to the middle of the 18th century, there was a massive, constant threat to Eastern and Central Europe from the Ottoman Empire. Ever since the Ottomans had put an end to the Eastern Roman Empire with the conquest of Constantinople in 1453, they had been on European soil - until the beginning of the 20th century! In 1521 Belgrade was conquered; Budapest (and large parts of Hungary) became Turkish shortly afterwards for two and a half centuries. Twice, in 1529 and 1683, the Turks laid siege to Vienna!'The Turkish Wars are one of the greatest, most dramatic events of the early modern period. All the European powers were involved: Hungary, Poland, Habsburg and the Holy Roman Empire, France and Russia. In his new book, Klaus-Jürgen Bremm revives this dramatic and warlike epoch, creating a grand panorama of history, from Luther's disparaging "Turkish Writings" to the "Sick Man on the Bosporus".
