Description
Between 1650 and 1780, two basic signatures of early modern Europe intensified: the establishment of modern armies and the more intensive recording, use and shaping of the environment. In his innovative study, Jan Philipp Bothe uses the example of the emerging "science of war" to show how these two processes were interrelated and asks about the place of nature in the tactical and strategic thinking of the time.
In this way, he not only opens up a perspective on an interface between military and environmental historical research, but also reconstructs the slow shaping of a special military view of nature, which tactically analysed and sought to exploit natural conditions and dependencies, but at the same time also vacillated between the protection and destruction of cultivated nature. Volume 11 of the series "War and Conflict".
