Maria Theresa certainly went her own way in cultural policy. She harboured reformist interests not only in the school system, but also in the field of art. She commissioned contemporaries and helped portrait painting to flourish, not least for the cross-border consolidation of the newly formed House of Habsburg-Lorraine. This function was also fulfilled by allegorical paintings and ceiling frescoes, for which impressive designs have been preserved. Landscape painting was held in high esteem, and finally there were also outstanding achievements in sculpture - for example by Balthasar Ferdinand Moll and Franz Xaver Messerschmidt.
