Description
On the eve of the Revolution, artillery was still considered a "useful accessory", as the military theorist Guibert put it. But in the early 1790s it quickly acquired its noble rank in battle and became a corps, or rather an autonomous branch of arms, that was to play a leading role in all the campaigns from 1792 to 1815. In this book, you will learn all about the characteristics of the pieces of artillery used, their organisation and their tactical use, that is, that branch of arms which had the honour of having Napoleon in its ranks.
Just before the French Revolution (1789-1790), perhaps the greatest reformer of French artillery and its great protagonist, the First Inspector General Jean-Baptiste de Gribeauval, to whom this work is dedicated, died on 5 May 1789!
