Description
This type compass describes all locomotives and railcars of Switzerland's best-known private railway - the BLS.
The name goes back to the Bernese Alpine railway company BLS (Bern-Lötschberg-Simplon), founded in 1906, which was one of the larger private railways in Switzerland with a standard-gauge route network of 245 kilometres. It operated north-south traffic (goods and rolling motorway) over the Lötschberg (Lötschberg line) and was responsible for regional traffic in the greater Bern area. It also operated shipping on Lakes Thun and Brienz. BLS Lötschbergbahn AG merged with Regionalverkehr Mittelland (RM) in June 2006 to form the new BLS AG.
The new BLS AG maintains a standard-gauge route network of 440 kilometres, making it the largest private railway in Switzerland. It also operates shipping on Lakes Thun and Brienz.
