The First World War is often remembered for its trench warfare, massive artillery attacks and the dominance of horse-drawn logistics but it was also the first truly motorised conflict. Imperial German Army Motorised Troops 191418 Volume 1 uncovers the overlooked history of mechanical transport in Germany and the soldiers who operated it, tracing the rise of motorised troops from pre-war experiments to an important part of the Kaiser's army. Drawing on extensive German-language sources and rare archival photographs, Jacek Zabielski examines how the Imperial Army used trucks, motorcycles, staff cars and road locomotives to meet the enormous demands of modern industrial warfare. Starting with early government subsidies and the tentative establishment of motor vehicle battalions before 1914, the book traces how civilian vehicles were requisitioned during mobilisation and how thousands of new machines were put into service to supply, equip and transport the army throughout Europe. The narrative examines the creation and daily operation of transport convoys, depots and parks, as well as the integration of motor vehicles into specialised branches: pioneers transporting pontoons, motorcycle squadrons delivering urgent messages, ambulances evacuating the wounded, and aviation units relying on motorised rescue teams. Motorised transport also played a central role in moving the heaviest German siege artillery, with steam- and petrol-powered tractors hauling enormous howitzers across devastated landscapes. This richly illustrated volume contains hundreds of rare and previously unpublished photographs showing vehicles and their crews on all frontsfrom the Western Front to the Balkans to the Middle Eastas well as specially commissioned colour images. Technical details are combined with human stories: drivers in leather tunics posing proudly next to their machines, improvised modifications to vehicles in the field, and the constant struggle against poor roads, fuel and tyre shortages, and the sheer mechanical strain of total war.
