On 20 November 1945, one of the most significant trials in history began in Nuremberg, with 24 high-ranking representatives of the Third Reich, including Hermann Göring, Joachim von Ribbentrop, Albert Speer and Rudolf Hess, standing trial. For a year, American photographer Charles W. Alexander took extraordinary photographs that show the people involved in the trial, including the defendants, their accusers, judges, witnesses and defence lawyers, as well as the locations, the courthouse, the cells and the courtroom, with rare sharpness and detail. These photographs allow us to see and understand what countless books on the Nuremberg trials have only described in words. After the proceedings against the defendants were concluded, French judge Henri Donnedieu de Vabres was presented with an album containing 115 photographs. This historic album, which is unique in Europe, is now kept at the Maison d'Izieu. Through a selection of 70 photographs, some of which have never been published before, the authors provide a unique and moving visual testimony to the most decisive trial of the 20th century.
