The First World War marked the beginning of mechanised warfare, and although Germany entered the conflict with limited experience in armoured vehicles, by 1918 it had launched some of the most ambitious innovations of the time. The development of tactics, organisation and technical design is covered in detail, as is the combat record of these early mechanised units. The focus of the volume is on the history of the Sturm-Panzerkraftwagen-Abteilungen the Sturm-Panzerkraftwagen units that operated both German A7V tanks and a number of captured Allied tanks. Although only a small number of A7Vs were produced, these machines, together with the converted British and French vehicles that were put into service, symbolised Germany's attempt in the final phase of the war to keep up with and adapt to the Allied tank innovations. The book examines their development, training and deployment on the battlefield in 1918, as well as the enormous challenges involved in maintaining and integrating such diverse machines into an army that still relied heavily on horse transport and traditional artillery. Beyond the machines, Zabielski also examines the human dimension: the uniforms, equipment and personal weapons of the motorised and armoured troops, illustrated with unique photographs that capture both the technical details and the everyday realities of service. The appendices contain valuable reference material, including technical specifications of important vehicles and a timeline of German mechanisation projects from 1914 to 1918.
