Bill Millin, bagpiper and soldier, drones the troops to sleep at the commando training centre in the Scottish Highlands and sets the march for the volunteer groups who sweat, run or march, but he also takes part in the manoeuvres in the harsh Scottish climate. On 6 June 1944, at the age of 22, he was selected to ring the bell for the Scottish-French Commandos, the first Allied troops to set foot on the sands of the Norman beaches, armed only with his bagpipes. He keeps a diary, a valuable account of the daily life of an ordinary soldier, ignorant of strategic considerations but determined to do his duty. Bill Millin, a good observer, fraternal and empathetic, Francophile and no more - but also no less - courageous than others, had the great good fortune to return from this three-month campaign unscathed by all dangers. He has given us an insight into the lives - and deaths - of his comrades-in-arms. His account, which is at once funny and tragic, sensitive and sometimes poetic, takes us into an intense period in which we experience the reality of an Allied musician and soldier in the Second World War at close quarters.
