From the early 18th century, Scotland produced a large number of medical doctors, many of whom joined the armed forces. This book describes the contribution of these doctors to military and naval medicine from the 18th century to the First World War. Each of the 12 chapters is based on a presentation given at an online symposium organised by the Scottish Society of the History of Medicine in collaboration with the History Society of the Royal Society of Medicine. The authors are experts in their respective fields. The book provides new insights into established leaders of this developing speciality, including Sir John Pringle and Sir James McGrigor, while Sir Charles Bell's legacy to military surgery, his work of art, is analysed afresh. Other chapters describe the remarkable story of Dr James Barry, the first trans man to qualify as a doctor in Britain, and the painstaking detective work of Sir David Bruce in discovering the cause of brucellosis. One of the chapters on the First World War describes the work of Gray, Fraser and Wade, while the other reports on a Scottish women's clinic in Salonika. There are also reports on lesser-known personalities.
