Manned aviation began in Great Britain in 1784, and just two years later, the first fatal accident occurred. Since then, the development of aviation has led to faster, higher and larger aircraft that were unimaginable to the pioneers of the early days. Flying became an everyday activity, but with technological development came a high number of crashes. To keep pace, the investigation of aviation accidents had to be developed and improved. First published under the title God Gave Us Wings, this work describes all recorded accidents, their investigation and the lessons learned. It is based on official documents and contemporary reports. The series is richly illustrated with photographs from the period and is the most comprehensive work on this important aspect of aviation history. Volume 1 covers the earliest years, from the beginning of manned balloon flights to the outbreak of the First World War in 1914.
