The American Civil War, known for its bloody field battles, was also the scene of numerous fierce battles for fortified positions, from the bombardment of Fort Sumter in April 1861 to the protracted siege of Petersburg in 186465. The crucial role of key centers such as Vicksburg, Mississippi, and Suffolk, Virginia, compelled both sides to evolve and refine their siege tactics, employing the latest technologies for offense and defense. In this study, historian Ron Field examines the conduct of sieges during the Civil War. He analyzes the various artillery pieces used in siege warfare, considers the evolving role of specialized siege warfare units, and discusses the effectiveness of each side's respective strategies regarding bombardment, mine construction, tunneling, and direct assault. The insightful text is complemented by carefully selected archival images and eight specially created illustrations that demonstrate the tactics and technologies of the Union and Confederate forces.
