Berninger, Ulrike (Hrsg.) Ave Caesar. Die Antikenausstattung des Hirsvogelsaals in Nürnberg

Built in Nuremberg in 1534, the Hirsvogelsaal was considered the most beautiful creation of the entire German early Renaissance until its destruction in 1945 due to its magnificent interior decoration, according to art historian Fritz Traugott Schulz. Based on the ancient subjects and quotations, this publication deals with the interior decoration of the banqueting hall, which was rebuilt in 2000, in diverse scholarly contributions and from various points of view. Special attention is paid to the new artistic creations of the emperor busts that were lost in the post-war turmoil: these were shown for the first time in an exhibition in 2009 and have since completed the interior decoration of the hall.

The furnishings, including the wall decoration attributed to Peter Flötner, the ceiling painting The Fall of Phaeton by Dürer's student Georg Pencz and the busts of the first twelve Roman emperors, take up a variety of ancient themes and models.
