Over the past fifty years, society, technology, the nature of conflict and the British Army itself have changed significantly. After reaching a low point in the 1970s, the Army's combat strength rose again in the 1980s in the face of a looming war with the Soviet Union. This combat effectiveness was then demonstrated in operations ranging from Kuwait in 1991 to Afghanistan in 2001 and the invasion of Iraq in 2003. This peak of military success was followed by two decades of decline. Mistakes in Iraq and Afghanistan led to a decline in support for military operations. Defence spending cuts and botched equipment procurement meant that by 2021, the British Army was only half the size it was in 1970, with much of its key combat equipment either obsolete or nearing obsolescence. Ben Barry served in the army from 1975 to 2010, often in key staff positions, and worked closely with the army for the following ten years. This new study draws not only on his personal experience, but also on a wide range of written sources, supplemented by interviews, to provide a new interpretation of this period that challenges existing narratives.
