Description
Italy became embroiled in the War of the Austrian Succession (1740-1748) as Spain attempted to recapture the Lombard duchies lost in 1708. The Spanish expedition of Montemar (1742-43) was repulsed by the Austrians thanks to the intervention of the Piedmontese army on the Panaro, and Austria took advantage of this to try in turn to reconquer the Kingdom of Naples, which had been conquered ten years earlier by Charles of Bourbon, son of the Spanish royal family.
The Austrian pursuit of the skilful Spanish retreat failed in the summer of 1744 in front of the entrenched camp that the Spanish and Neapolitan armies had set up under the command of King Charles of Bourbon at Velletri. Since no one wanted to risk a decisive battle, there was a long stalemate, dearly paid for by the population, with various diplomatic back-and-forths and Austrian attempts, partly supported by English ships and reactionaries hostile to King Charles' reformism, to win an indirect victory (first with a raid in Abruzzo, then with a narrowly failed coup against Velletri with the aim of capturing the king). The campaign ended with the Austrians' retreat to Rimini and King Charles' solemn entry into Rome, celebrated by the Pope.
