Description
The bloody battle that took place on the banks of the Po on 15 August 1702 marked the beginning of a bloody struggle that lasted until 1706, in which even the towns were not spared and in which the respective inhabitants took an active part. The author deals with the events leading up to the battle and with the composition of the armies involved, especially that of the State of Milan, which was partly made up of officers and soldiers from the Italian peninsula.
The reconstruction of the situation on the ground is very meticulous and is done using sources that were difficult to find. What is remarkable is the detailed study of the state of the sites at the time of the battle, which today is no longer comparable to that of 1702 due to the changes that the course of the Po has undergone over time and the human activities and settlements that have taken place. Without it, it would not be easy to understand the movements of the troops in the area and the course of the battle itself. In this book, Fabio Fiorentin has managed to capture the various aspects of one of the most significant moments of the War of the Spanish Succession in Italy, which culminated in the famous siege of Turin in 1706 and ended with the defeat of the Franco-Spanish armies, which were forced to abandon the peninsula. In it, a strong imperial (or Austrian) dominance was established in place of the Spanish, which, between various vicissitudes and the Napoleonic interruption, shaped Italian history for the next 150 years. Fiorentin also extends his research to the events after the battle and their impact on the overall course of the war, so one may look forward to his further studies on this period.
