Description
Many years ago, together with our friend Massimo Brandani, we began to collect information and ideas for a publication on the army that the Pope had to hastily collect in 1708 to face the bullying of the imperial armies, which, after the victory of Turin in 1706, raged through the Peninsula, threatening the minor states of the Italian Princes, claiming the right to dispose of the territory and its resources at the will of the Court of Vienna, engaged in the hard war for the succession of Spain to support their claims to that throne. Massimo's pencil knew how to capture the spirit of the time and from the sparse descriptions and arid figures of the archival documents, with the help of some contemporary painting he was able to recreate the appearance that those soldiers should have shown. There was neither the time nor the way to reach the publication, with the exception of two meager articles published in a magazine for enthusiasts, because Massimo suddenly left us. After years we have managed to reassemble and rework the pieces of the puzzle and we present the result in this work, which we dedicate to our deceased friend. Roberto Vela, for his part, was able to reinterpret the spirit of Massimo's drawings and on the basis of some notes he recreated the summary tables of the uniforms of the majority of the bodies created in 1708. that we dedicate to the missing friend.
