This book is not another battle chronicle; it is an investigation into how the motivation of individual soldiers to fight and win can make all the difference in a battle. In December 1944, the American 28th Infantry Division occupied an 85-mile front stretching along the German border with Belgium and Luxembourg. There, they repelled a desperate attempt by Hitler to drive a wedge through the Allied lines to the port of Antwerp. Hitler believed that this would give his scientists the time they needed to complete the development of superweapons that would turn the tide of war. The book examines first-hand accounts of the men who held the line with extraordinary tenacity in December 1944 and January 1945. These accounts are used to examine the importance of the chaplains who cared for the religious needs of the men and, more broadly, the efforts of the US government to inspire its soldiers to fight for the American Way of Life. It shows how these efforts and interventions spilled over onto the battlefield and shaped the determination of those who, if necessary, had to make the ultimate sacrifice.
