The 1991 Gulf War was the largest tank-versus-tank confrontation of modern times and the only large-scale tank battle ever to involve major NATO armies. As the Iraqi army was primarily equipped with modern Soviet and Warsaw Pact tanks, it was also a rare example of NATO tanks proving themselves in battle against their Eastern Bloc rivals. In this book, Steven J. Zaloga examines the many types of tanks used in this conflict and how they compare in terms of both technology and battlefield performance. He covers not only US, British and French armour, but also that of other Allied forces, including Saudi Arabia and Kuwait. It covers not only the tanks built by the Soviet Union and the Warsaw Pact, but also Iraq's strong indigenous armaments industry, which produced a number of notable innovations such as the 'Enigma' tank with laminate armour. Unravelling the details of the greatest armoured war of modern times, the book is packed with data and illustrated with images and numerous photographs, including some previously unpublished, as well as detailed descriptions of the little-known markings of Iraqi armoured divisions.
