In 1980, Iraq invaded Iran, triggering an eight-year war. By the end of the 1980s, Iraq was bankrupt, had accumulated enormous debts, and its oil-rich neighbour Kuwait, which Iraq had long claimed as part of Greater Iraq, seemed the perfect solution. Saddam Hussein's invasion in August 1990 led to a confrontation between one of the largest Arab armies and the smallest, and Kuwait fell within a few days. Angered by this turn of events and concerned about Hussein's military power, Saudi Arabia entered into negotiations with the United States, Britain and France to form a coalition to drive Iraq out of Kuwait. More than 30 countries joined the coalition. Operation Desert Shield had begun. With contemporary images, maps, diagrams and illustrations, the book delves into the response of the coalition forces, which helped liberate Kuwait after a month-long air campaign to weaken Iraqi forces. Although Iraq was defeated, Hussein remained in power, and the conflict would flare up again a decade later. This detailed study brings the ground offensive of the Gulf War to life.
