For four months in 1945, the skies over Tokyo saw some of the most intense aerial combat of the Pacific War between USAAF P-51 "Mustang" pilots and fighter aircraft of the Imperial Japanese Army (IJAAF) and Imperial Japanese Naval Aviation (IJNAF). The Japanese used ten different types of fighter aircraft to defend the relatively small and well-defined target area, but the already legendary Merlin-powered P-51D Mustang with its pioneering very long range (VLR) capabilities was to prove more than a match for their combined forces. In this riveting study, Pacific War historian Carl Molesworth uses combat reports and eyewitness accounts to tell how the "Mustang" pilots of VII Fighter Command went from escorting B-29 bombers to actively tracking and attacking enemy aircraft. Illustrations of weapons, cockpits and combat scenes specially commissioned for this publication, as well as a wealth of archive photographs, bring the narrative to life and provide a vivid and insightful impression of what it was like to be a fighter pilot fighting in the air war over Japan in 1945.
