The Yak-1 was the first fighter aircraft developed by the Yakovlev Design Bureau and had its first flight on January 13, 1940. The aircraft had a mixed construction with wooden wings and tips and a truss fuselage made of steel tubes with canvas skin. The fighter was well armed with a 20 mm Shvak cannon and two synchronized 7.62 mm Shkas machine guns mounted above the engine. The Yak-1 was the most successful of the new pre-war generation of Soviet serial fighters (MiG-3, LaGG-3 and Yak-1), combining good flight data with simple controls.
